Former Essendon AFLW player Jacqui Vogt engages in a mentoring session with Ladder participants in Gippsland As the official charity of the AFL Players’ Association, Ladder provides a unique program offering that facilitates meaningful engagement between current and former players with our program participants and Alumni. Players have the power to make a real difference, while gaining valuable professional and personal development opportunities during and beyond their playing career. We recently had the incredible opportunity to welcome former Essendon AFLW player, Jacqui Vogt to spend a day in our Gippsland program and lead a mentoring session. For many of our young people, once-in-a-lifetime experiences like these don’t present themselves often or at all. Research shows that the more positive childhood experiences (PCEs) an individual has, the less likely they are to develop depression or other mental health problems so it’s so important to foster these types of opportunities. The day started off with the group attending a tour of TAFE Gippsland where participants learned about the diverse and dynamic opportunities available to further their education and career prospects. Following this, the group sat down with Jacqui as she shared about her journey to where she is now, speaking about the importance of determination, resilience and believing in yourself – values that go beyond the sport. Jacqui spoke openly about the challenges she’s faced along the way including overcoming injury and the importance of pushing through those moments when times get tough. Jacqui’s visit also reinforced the message that no dream is too big and that opportunities are there for anyone willing to work hard to seize them. Achieving success in a field that has traditionally been dominated by men, Jacqui has inspired the participants and has become a real role model for the young females in the group. "Meeting Jacqui was great! She is lovely. She also made me believe that I can achieve anything, even if it seems impossible. Hearing about her journey and how she didn’t give up, even when things were tough, really inspired me. I never thought someone like her would come to visit us. I can chase my dreams, just like she did. I want to be strong, work hard, and give back to my community just like she does." said Tanisha, Alumni program member. Jacqui also spoke to the importance of community, sharing that she values giving back and being involved in the lives of others. This opportunity was extra special for her, having grown up nearby in Traralgon and having family still in the area. Her presence made our young people feel seen, supported and inspired to take steps towards their own goals, knowing that they too have the power to give back one day. “It was really enjoyable and great to see what Ladder is all about.” said Jacqui. AFL and AFLW players have a unique perspective and experiences that really resonate with young people in Ladder programs. We would like to thank Jacqui for spending time with our program participants and making them feel valued and inspired.
