Practice makes progress: building confidence to tackle that job interview Once participants craft their resumes, the next important piece of the job-readiness puzzle is interview preparation. Mock interviews are a crucial part of Ladder programs as it helps participants build confidence and develop essential communication skills. Being prepared for an interview allows them to present themselves effectively and articulate their thoughts clearly. This kind of preparation fosters a proactive mindset, encourages young people to take control of their future and empowers them to value preparation in achieving success. "Mock interviews are a game changer. They help you practice your responses, improve your confidence, and ease the nerves before the real deal." said Sharhna, Ladder program participant. "It’s all about preparation. Mock interviews give you the chance to work out the kinks and gain the feedback you need to stand out." said Seth, another Ladder program participant. Ladder invited Monash Rural Health to assist as interviewers alongside the Ladder Development Coaches. Not only did this provide a practical, community-focused perspective, there were also some familiar faces as some medical students recently completed their placements in the Ladder program. Having interviewers from local services like Monash Rural Health provides participants with an insight into the expectations of a large workplace and the understanding to respond to both high pressure environments and the challenges that communities face. Despite the observed and understandable nervousness from participants, both Monash Rural Health and Ladder Development Coaches were impressed with how well the young people communicated their skill sets and explained their experience with teamwork, leadership and cooperation. “I found it a great opportunity to get to know the young people a little better and learn about their interests, vocationally and personally. These young people certainly have a lot to offer a potential employer and hopefully undergoing the mock interviews helps them to overcome any understandable nerves. This interview process is an invaluable opportunity offered by Ladder and I would encourage more people to undertake the mock interview process, whether as an interviewer or interviewee.” said Margaret, Deputy Director, Monash Rural Health – Churchill. Following the successful mock interviews, participants will take time to reflect on the feedback they received. They are encouraged to set specific goals for improvement, revisit their resume and cover letter to make any necessary adjustments and continue practicing and working with Ladder Development Coaches. "Mock interviews allow you to make mistakes in a safe space, so you’re not caught off guard when it counts." said Taidden, Ladder program participant. Thank you to Monash Rural Health for assisting in the mock interviews and helping build the confidence and skills of Ladder participants. Manage Cookie Preferences
