Building positive relationships with program participants is vital in ensuring they feel safe and confident and get the most out of the Ladder Step Up program. We recently commenced another Latrobe Valley program and in the first week, Ladder Development Coaches worked closely with participants to foster trust, support and connection. The group also spent time getting to know each other, finding common ground, and encouraging one another. These relationships are key to the success of the program, and it was amazing to see these bonds forming so early on.

"At first I was nervous to come, but everyone’s been really cool. The development coaches actually care, and that makes a difference."
– Ash M, 19

"It’s been really good to meet people who are kind of in the same boat as me. I feel like I’ve made mates already and that makes showing up easier."
– AJ, 17

The first week sets a strong foundation for what’s to come, with sessions focused on building positive relationships, goal setting and exploring the values that underpin the program. Goals are both professional and personal, short-term and future focused. Whether it was related to education, employment, personal wellbeing, or building confidence, everyone left with clear intentions and tools to keep themselves accountable.

"This is the first time I’ve actually sat down and thought about what I want in the future. Setting goals like this made me feel like I can actually do something with my life."
– Bree, 17

"Learning about values made me think about what kind of person I want to be—not just at work, but in general. I want to be someone people can rely on."
– Lilly, 17

Gratitude is another theme that is reflected throughout the first week of program. We explore what it means to have and to give gratitude - whether that’s appreciating opportunities, acknowledging others’ support, or recognising our own efforts. Participants were encouraged to express thanks and reflect on what they’re grateful for, helping to build a positive mindset that can carry them through any challenges ahead.

"Gratitude isn't something I ever really thought about. But now I’ve realised I’ve got a lot to be thankful for, and I want to start showing that more."
– Ryan S, 16

In the coming weeks as we prepare participants for pathways into employment and education, we discussed how independence and routine are essential. Learning how to manage time, take responsibility, and stay committed to daily habits lays the groundwork for success in any professional or learning environment. These skills empower young people to take control of their future and show up ready for what’s next.

The first week is just the beginning and we’re already seeing signs of growth, connection, and confidence.

"Before this week I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I’ve got goals and things I want to do and it’s now really cool that I’ve got people backing me to reach them."
– Ryan L, 23
